As of April 2022, the Wren Classic Portfolio has expanded to include non-carbon offset projects, including this one, Clean Air Task Force. Wren's goal is to make a tangible difference in reversing the climate crisis, and better climate policy is undeniably part of the solution. While supporting climate policy groups does not directly offset carbon emissions, the dollar-for-dollar impact can be just as impactful.

Clean Air Task Force (CATF) is a global environmental nonprofit organization working to address climate change and promote clean air by changing the policies, business practices, technologies, and narratives necessary to catalyze the rapid advancement of carbon-free energy sources and other climate-protecting solutions. CATF envisions a world where the energy needs of all people are met efficiently without damaging the atmosphere.

Most climate policy focuses on three main solution pathways: putting a price on carbon, improving energy efficiency, and accelerating wind and solar deployment. These are useful, but they will only get us about 1/ 3 of the way towards the emissions reductions our planet needs. Clean Air Task Force focuses on advancing a full suite of carbon-free energy solutions including carbon capture, zero-carbon fuels, advanced nuclear, and superhot rock energy that will drive the other 2/ 3 of global emissions reductions.

CATF works to catalyze climate solutions across many sectors, from bioenergy to zero-carbon fuels.

To mitigate the worst impacts of climate change while providing better living standards in the developing world, we need carbon-free electricity available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and zero-carbon fuels to power a global energy system that will need to be at least two times its current size. Clean Air Task Force has been working tirelessly for over 25 years towards that goal, and for multiple years in a row has been ranked as “one of the most effective organizations in the world working to address climate change” by multiple external assessors.

How does it work?

Clean Air Task Force is focused on driving change in four key areas:

1. Change the narrative to communicate the full scope of the challenge and totality of the solutions required.
2. Change technology to make available the full suite of carbon-free options like advanced renewables, zero-carbon fuels, carbon capture, advanced nuclear, and superhot rock energy at an affordable cost.
3. Change business models to include modular, manufacturable energy solutions that can be deployed anywhere quickly.
4. Change policy to develop, demonstrate, and scale up the technologies and systems needed to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century.

Why this project?

With more than 25 years of internationally recognized expertise on climate policy and a fierce commitment to exploring all potential solutions, CATF has carved out a unique role in the environmental and climate movement as a science-driven, solutions-focused, and strategic organization that gets results.

CATF pulls hard on the most effective regulatory policy levers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously pushing an advanced set of carbon-free technologies into the global marketplace toward widespread deployment. Their work spans everything from advocating for stricter coal and bioenergy standards to unlocking additional funding for carbon capture, nuclear energy, superhot rock energy, and zero-carbon fuels.

CATF also advocates for strong oversight and regulation of the voluntary carbon market and limited use of carbon offsets. Policy action, regulation, and advancing large-scale technological solutions are what is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonize the global energy system without sacrificing energy security. With a track record of success in these endeavors over 25 years, it’s clear that CATF is one of the most effective organizations at leveraging policy to make a big impact.

Clean Air Task Force has also been rated by multiple external evaluators, including Giving Green and Founder Pledge, as one of the most effective organizations in the world working to address climate change.
