As of April 2022, the Wren Classic Portfolio has expanded to include non-carbon offset projects, including this one, carbon180.Wren's goal is to make a tangible difference in reversing the climate crisis, and better climate policy is undeniably part of the solution. While supporting climate policy groups does not directly offset carbon emissions, the dollar-for-dollar impact can be just as impactful.

Carbon180 is a policy group that advocates for large-scale carbon removal to reverse global warming. There's no question the world must quickly and drastically slash emissions. But to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we can't stop there. The truth is, reducing emissions does nothing to address the more than two trillion tonnes of carbon already released into our atmosphere — the planet-warming legacy of 200 years of human activity.

A recent Carbon180 report, titled 'Soil Carbon Moonshot', lays out key recommendations for scaling soil carbon storage.

The good news is that solutions are within reach—and Carbon180 is advocating for their deployment at gigatonne scale. They advocate for a spectrum of carbon removal methods, from soil carbon storage to direct air capture. Since their founding in 2015, Carbon180 has helped put carbon removal on the map, catalyzing billions in new investments and pioneering some of the first major federal incentives. They’re one of the leading organizations generating institutional momentum for carbon removal, and were named “one of the most effective climate organizations” for two years in a row by Vox.

How does it work?

1. Carbon180 releases reports on the potential of carbon removal in fighting climate change and identifies funding gaps in the carbon removal landscape. They also meet with key decision makers at public and private institutions.

2. Large companies, philanthropic organizations, and government policymakers read the reports and incorporate them into their organizational plans.

3. Governments and private companies change their policies as a result of this advocacy: for example, Carbon180 successfully advocated for Direct Air Capture technology to be included in the 2017 45Q tax credit.

Why this project?

Carbon180 is a relatively new organization that has already used their influence to significantly increase funding for carbon removal projects in the United States. Carbon removal is a key tool in ending the climate crisis, so if Carbon180 can keep advocating successfully they could unlock billions more in funding for carbon removal projects, creating leverage with every dollar we send them.
