Nearly every air conditioner, refrigerator, heatpump, and even most cars contain greenhouse gases 500x more powerful than CO2. Take a 12 oz can of refrigerant that costs $10 at your local hardware store. If we released this gas into the atmosphere, it would cause more global warming than driving 1200 miles. Each year, these super-pollutants cause more global greenhouse gas emissions than the entire aviation sector.
On the one hand, the emissions from refrigerants are killing people by causing more extreme heat waves, wildfires, floods, and famines. But on the other hand, these chemicals are key to technologies like refrigerators and air conditioners that save lives. So what can we do to mitigate the negative impact of refrigerants?
