While the impact of this action is rather tiny on an individual scale, it's one of the easiest to take to minimize waste for birthdays, milestones, and holiday seasons.

The Greeting Card Association estimates 1.6 billion holiday cards are purchased annually. A 2014 post from Sierra Club estimates that one tree could produce roughly 15,000 sheets of A4 paper. If we say a holiday card and envelope take as much wood pulp to produce as 2-A4 sheets, we can naïvely say our holiday cards are responsible for upwards of 200,000 trees deaths 🥲.

If you do receive a card you don't want to keep, be sure to recycle it. The American Paper and Forest Association reports that over 94% of Americans have access to some kind of recycling program, so you don't have any good excuses this year...

More importantly if you decide to take this resolution into the new year, you can really multiply your impact by going paperless with services that allow it — your bank statements, health records, and bills just to name a few ideas. Statista estimates 401 metric tonnes of paper and paperboard are produced worldwide each year.

A simple way to send an electronic card is to design one yourself, and then email or text it as an image or PDF to friends. Design services like Canva come with many templates and are straightforward to use.
